If your average Joe from today went back 2000 years in time how could he influence technology?

An average Joe would have no impact on technology.

First, they are average to begin with, per the constraint added to this question. So, they are not a scientist or engineer. In other words, they are a user of technology. Not a creator.

They would also have a hard time just learning the local language. And that's assuming they ended up in ancient Rome in year 24, as the Empire is just beginning to head toward is overall peak. Anywhere else just compounds the problem, if you are a European or American.

Those in India or China also have similar problems, as China 2000 years ago is not China of 2024. Plus, if you are Asian and end up in Rome, some problem as a European in India. A good part of your time is going to be spent learning the language, as well as obtain food & shelter while trying to establish yourself.

A lot of this also depends on what you were able to bring with you. If you went back using “The Terminator” time travel technology, showing up in year 24 naked and not know the language has bad day written all over it.

Showing up with a trunk full books, tools and other goodies, plus a .22 revolver is going to work out much better. Things like sewing needles or pocketknives could help pay living expenses while you get settled.

No, if you could precisely control where you went…
