Can lightsabers from Star Wars be created in real life? Are there any technologies that are theoretically possible but not yet feasible due to cost or practicality constraints

Lightsabers from the Star Wars universe have captivated audiences for decades with their futuristic technology and iconic appearance. While the concept of a laser sword may seem like pure science fiction, some technologies could potentially bring lightsabers to life in the real world.

One key component of a lightsaber is the blade itself, typically depicted as a beam of energy emitted from a hilt. While current laser technology does exist, creating a stable and controllable beam strong enough to mimic a lightsaber would require significant advancements in power and precision. Additionally, the ability to contain and manipulate this energy without causing harm to the wielder or others nearby presents another challenge.

Another crucial element of lightsabers is the ability to cut through solid objects with ease. This would require a cutting mechanism to generate extreme heat and force in a concentrated area. While technologies such as plasma cutters exist, they are currently limited in their precision and portability.

While it may be theoretically possible to create lightsabers using existing technologies, cost and practicality constraints make it unlikely shortly. Advances in laser technology, plasma manipulation, and energy containment would all be necessary for bringing lightsabers from science fiction into reality.

Though..there is another type of “lightsaber”.

This is a protostar.

According to Wikipedia, “Archaic lightsabers—commonly referred to as protostars—were the first known lightsaber design. Like later lightsabers, their focusing crystal was set inside a hilt from which a blade of energy was emitted.”

The way they worked was that “the proto-saber featured two physical prongs, which rose from a crossguard. When activated, energy would surge up the prongs and form into a blade between them”.

And, yes, HackSmith made them.

Do you see that box and the wire connected to the lightsaber? That’s a protosaber. Making a lightsaber would require an “infinite” amount of energy, as you can turn it on and off as you wish.

So no, we probably will never make lightsabers in real life, but protosabers, yes!
